NKAYI - Lack of adequate school resources and lack of development is affecting the girl-child’s education in Nkayi's Sivalo area.
It has been reported to Amakhosikazi media that children from schools around Sivalo area are facing education challenges because of lack of basic school needs and poor school facilities as most schools especially primaries do not produce good results.
A concerned resident from Sivalo (ward 11) in Nkayi district who preferred to be called MaMlotshwa said water supply was a problem at Sivalo primary school.
“There is no water supply facility at the school and if children need to water the school gardens as a requirement for their fgriculture subject they have to fetch water from Tshangani river which is about 2 to 3 kilometres from the school”, said Mamlotshwa.
She also said that children were also left with little choice but to drink the unsafe water from the river which may opened them up to diseases.
Themba Dube from ward 11 raised his worry on lack of development in schools around the ward and that nothing was being done to solve the problem so far.
“Our schools are poor in terms of development especially primary schools, there are no text books, classrooms are not enough and children have to share. The pass rate from last year’s results was not good and this worries us as parents”, said Dube.
Amakhosikazi media reporter managed to speak to Nomusa Dlodlo wife to Chief Sivalo who confirmed the concerns saying she had also raised the issue of school children walking long distances about 8 to 10 kilometres to school.
“There is only one secondary school in ward 11 and three primary schools and children have to travel as far as 10 kilometres to school and this is not safe for a girl child, we’ve also noticed that most of them get tired of going to school and decide to stay at home”, said Dlodlo.
“Some of these children have to cross Tshangani river to and from school and it is not safe for them especially during the rainy season and some of them decide to stay at home during rainy season and by so doing they miss out school lessons”, she added.
She also added that most girls around Sivalo area are forced into early marriages because of the situation they go through.
Efforts to get a comment from Nkayi District Education Office concerning the issue were fruitless as phones rang without response.
